cat drinking water

Water has so many health benefits. Commit to drinking more of it today! Image: wabisabi2015 via Flickr CC.

With the holidays now officially over (no, you can’t blame Valentine’s day for not making it to the gym) it’s time to get back on track with those healthy habits you said you were going to focus on this year. One of those habits should be knocking back more water, because there are more reasons than JUST “it’s healthy” to stay hydrated.

Water is the second most popular beverage in the US…with soda taking the number 1 spot just ahead of it. How is that even possible?? Make the choice to drink more of it, because the benefits are endless, which is not the case for soda. (Not to mention, H2O is free.)

Don’t forget that drinking water can help with weight loss. Many studies have found a connection between water consumption and losing a few pounds. Water helps people feel full and as a result of drinking enough of it, you will consume fewer calories.

You need H2O to fuel those muscles. Sweating at the gym, as we all know (or should), causes your muscles and body to lose water. When the muscles don’t have water, they get tired. So for energy, try drinking water to push through those chin-ups. Not only that but water can help fight fatigue too. Rather than reaching for that cup of coffee, get water because tiredness is a symptom of dehydration.

Our kidneys process 200 quarts of blood DAILY and they need water to sift out waste and transport urine to the bladder. So get to drinking or you won’t clear away what you don’t need.

Water is also a sickness fighter. It can help with decongestion and dehydration, which will help the body bounce back when you are fighting a cold. Although, don’t swap a glass for a trip to the doctor, and make listening to your body’s needs a priority.

Still not convinced about the benefits of drinking water? Greatist provides even more concrete evidence as to why you should hydrate with H2O.
