The annual Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards are always a star-studded, fashionable affair, and this year’s event was no exception. The CDFA Awards are like the Oscars of the fashion world; each year, the organization recognizes the individuals who have made the biggest contributions to American fashion. From avant-garde contemporary designers, to the pioneers of classic American fashion, the CDFA Awards always draw out the biggest names in fashion and entertainment.
Among the fashionable honorees of the 2014 CFDA Awards was singer Rihanna, who was presented with this year’s Fashion Icon Award. Rihanna didn’t waste any time living up to her new title; the pop star showed up to the event wearing a completely sheer floor-length gown. Describes Fashionista’s Lauren Indvik, “Rihinna wore a custom, crystal-embellished fishnet dress with matching gloves and headdress designed by young American designer Adam Selman and jewelry by another American designer, Paul Morelli,” of the audacious ensemble. Indvik also explains how the fashion icon’s “breasts and bum were in full view, as was the nude thong, the only pieces of clothing she wore under the dress,” of the revealing look.
Vogue’s infamous editor Anna Wintour presented Rihanna with the CFDA’s Fashion Icon Award, saying that “The point is to be audacious, even jaw-dropping or button-pushing – and yes, we all know she enjoys pushing buttons – while remaining true to yourself,” of the singer’s approach to personal style. In her acceptance speech, Rihanna noted that in many ways, fashion has always been something of a crutch for her. “Fashion has always been my defense mechanism,” she explains. “Even to this day I mean, that is how I think about it. I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion.”
Rihanna’s look for the event definitely speaks to her constant desire to push the limits in the world of fashion. Hers was by far the most daring look of the evening, but other fashion heavyweights like Marc Jacobs, the Olsen twins, Tom Ford, and Alexander Wang showed up looking equally fabulous, if not a little, ahem, conservative.
