If there is one thing that can be said for 1990, it is that there were a lot of great movies that came out that year. Icons like Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese were putting out fresh and exciting work, and we also received the beautiful but unknown Julia Roberts who was just teetering on the edge of stardom at that time. Despite the fact it’s been 25 years, it still seems like classic movies like Pretty Woman, Ghost, and Home Alone were just released. Let’s take a look back at some of the most beloved movies that came out in 1990.

Goodfellas – This was one of the few stories outside of The Godfather that still sets the gold standard for gangster films.

King of New York – This Abel Ferrara’s gritty crime-drama is a clever interpretation of “Robin Hood” which became a cult classic and also offers a great example of early 90s fashion.

La Femme Nikita – Nothing holds up to this film where convicted felon Nikita is given a new identity and trained to be a spy/assassin instead of going to jail.

Metropolitan – Because you forgot how charming Whit Stillman’s understated debut film is.

Ghost – You still can’t think about sitting on a potter’s wheel without getting a little turned on.

Pretty Woman – Julia Roberts is everything. The best scene is when Julia does a rendition of Prince’s “Kiss” while in the bubble bath.

Home Alone – This holiday season classic is still fun to watch any time of the year.

Edward Scissorhands – Because you forgot how much you loved seeing former real-life couple Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder share the screen together.

These are just a handful of the many, many incredible movies that came out in 1990. Although the last 25 years have brought us thousands of incredible films, it’s hard to let go of these old favorites. What are some of your favorite movies that came out of the early 90s?
